If the phrase “pre-wedding photoshoot” makes you picture a full costume change, a fog machine, and someone directing you into twelve different poses against a sunset, I’d like to reset that image. That’s one version of it. It’s not mine.

A pre-wedding shoot, done well, is simply a chance to get comfortable in front of a camera before the big day, with someone who already knows how you move together, well before the pressure of a wedding timeline is anywhere in the room. No styling brief, no theme to commit to. Just an hour or two spent somewhere that means something to you.

What to Expect at Your Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

What the day actually looks like

We usually start with a walk, somewhere familiar rather than a location chosen purely because it photographs well. That could be the park you had your first date in, your local high street, or simply the area around your home. Familiarity does more work than scenery.

From there, I mostly stay quiet and let you talk to each other rather than to me. Some couples like a loose starting point, walking side by side, a coffee somewhere, and I work around whatever you’re already doing rather than pausing you constantly to reset a pose. The best shots from a pre-wedding session are almost always the ones taken when you’d forgotten I was there.

Expect it to run somewhere between one and two hours, depending on how many locations we cover and how the light’s behaving. No rigid shot list, no rush.

Tips for feeling comfortable

Almost everyone feels a bit self-conscious for the first ten minutes. That’s completely normal, and honestly expected, most people simply aren’t used to being photographed for a sustained stretch of time.

A few things genuinely help. Move rather than pose, walking, talking, even just fidgeting with your hands, gives you somewhere to put your attention other than the camera. Ignore me as much as you can, the more you talk to each other instead of performing for the lens, the better the photos end up looking. And it’s worth knowing that the awkward stretch is short. Almost every couple settles into it within the first quarter of an hour, once the novelty wears off.

What to wear

Skip the themed outfit. Wear something that feels like you, ideally something you’d genuinely reach for on a day off together, rather than an outfit bought specifically for the shoot. Coordinated tones tend to photograph better than an exact match, think complementary rather than identical.

Comfort matters more than most people expect. If your shoes hurt after twenty minutes, it shows in how you’re standing by the end of the session. Bring a layer if the weather’s uncertain, and if there’s a small, meaningful object you’d like included, a piece of jewellery, something with a story, that’s worth bringing along. It doesn’t need to be more than that.

Getting your photos, and what to do with them

Turnaround depends on the time of year. Outside wedding season, you’ll usually have your photos within a week. During wedding season, when I’ve got weddings alongside pre-wedding sessions to edit, it’s closer to two weeks. Either way, you’ll have them well before you need them for save-the-dates or anything else.

Once you have them, pre-wedding photos are worth using for more than a nice memory. They work well as save-the-dates, as a welcome sign or table plan detail on the day itself, or simply as the photo you finally update on social media instead of the one from three years ago. A few couples also like having one framed at the entrance to their reception, a small, personal touch most guests notice without anyone having to point it out.

Is a pre-wedding shoot right for you?

If the idea of being genuinely comfortable in front of a camera before your wedding day appeals to you, more than the idea of a styled, directed shoot, this is very much for you. My Collection 3 package includes a pre-wedding shoot alongside full wedding day coverage, a second photographer, and your wedding album, built for couples who want the whole experience covered properly, not just the day itself.

If you’d like to talk through what a session like this could look like for you, I’d love to hear from you.

A considered approach and a calm presence.

I believe the best images are created when couples feel relaxed and truly present. By working quietly and intuitively, I allow moments to unfold naturally, capturing the atmosphere, emotion, and subtle details that define your day.
My work is for couples who value experience over excess, and imagery that feels timeless, honest, and quietly refined.
